The firm was instructed on behalf its professional client, a solicitor, who was being investigated by the DWP for widespread benefit fraud dating back to 2008. It was alleged that our client had made multiple claims in different names for various state benefits over a 10 year period. The matter involved a detailed analysis of financial records dating back over this period to allow us to assess the basis and scope of the allegations being put forward. There followed a number of meetings with the DWP before submitting lengthy and detailed representations on behalf of our client. Following consideration of our representations, the DWP agreed that no charges should be brought against our client with the matter being dropped against him.
We are very pleased for our client who had to endure an extremely stressful period whilst waiting for a decision to be made in what was a lengthy enquiry. With the allegations having now been withdrawn he can continue to pursue his career with his reputation intact. Our client has commented as follows: “Shearman Bowen provided me with a first class service, that went well beyond the usual expectations of the normal client solicitor relationship. In one of the most stressful periods of my life, the team was available out of hours and even at weekends. Through meticulous preparation and intensive negotiation the firm have helped me get my life back. I cannot thank Mr Bowen and his team enough and highly recommend Shearman Bowen, especially for those wishing to avoid traumatic and lengthy court proceedings. ”
